COPPER SULFIDES THIN FILMS WITH CONTROLLED PROPERTIES FOR PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 10 › Nr. 9
Abstract:Films of CuxS with 430-700 nm thickness were deposited by robotic spray pyrolysis technique, at T = 300Â?C, using 90 sprayingsequences, from water:ethanol:glycerol = 7:2:1 (in volumes) solutions with a molar ratio Cu:S = 1:2.5-3.5. Relative dense, homogenous and uniform films of CuxS (x = 1.8-2), with Eg = 1.97-2.49 eV and exhibiting electric resistance behavior wereobtained. The as-deposited films were annealed in air or in sulfur atmosphere, at 300 Â?C, for one hour. Dense and uniform ...

PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF HYBRID NANOCOMPOSITES FILMS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 10 › Nr. 9
Abstract:Hybrid nanocomposites may synergistically combine and enhance the properties of inorganic nanoparticles and organicmolecules. The objective of this paper is to examine particular nanocomposites films based on binary copolymers and inorganic TiO2nanoparticles from the structure and properties point of view. These nanoparticles were dispersed in maleic anhydride-styrene(MAS) copolymer by using elaidic acid, trans isomer of the oleic acid, as coupling agent in order to increase the compatib...

A TECHNO-ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF BIODIESEL PRODUCTION FROM MICROALGAE
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 12 › Nr. 8
AbstractThe preliminary assessment of a cost-effective flow-sheet for the production of biodiesel from microalgae lipid fraction wascarried out. The study was based on approximated cost-estimation methods integrated with the simulation software Aspen Plus®.Several scenarios were investigated to compare costs regarding the main steps of the biodiesel production process. Ranges ofinput variables from downstream literature and experimental data were used to simulate the sections that define concret...

THE ROLE OF GREEN CHEMISTRY IN BIOMASS PROCESSING
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 12 › Nr. 3
The book edited by Haibo Xie and NicholasGathergood focuses on one of the most importantscientific issues of the 21 century which is thereplacing fossil fuel with sustainable alternatives suchas biomass. Fossil fuels are conventional rawmaterials for many industrial sectors includingchemical and energy production. Usage of fossil fuelis limited by their availability, price and carbonfootprint. Biomass is a renewable resource globallyavailable, cheaper and carbon sequestering. Step bystep shiftin...

DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A PLANT FOR GLYCEROL CONVERSION TO ACROLEIN
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 14 › Nr. 3
Abstract The development of biodiesel industry in the recent past brought into discussion the valorization of glycerol as the byproduct of this technology. Dehydration of glycerol leads to acrolein, mainly used as a raw material in the production of acrylic acid and its esters. Several research efforts dealing with the synthesis of acrolein from glycerol are reported in the literature. However, they are limited to catalyst testing on laboratory scale, no attention being paid to the process f...

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF Cu AND Ni BASED CATALYSTS IN THE HYDROGENATION PROCESS OF GLYCEROL
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 14 › Nr. 9
Abstract The paper describes a numerical analysis concerning the behaviour of Cu and Ni based catalysts having different mole ratios of Ni to Cu in the process of glycerol hydrogenolysis. The impregnation technique was used to prepare the copper and nickel based catalysts. Our study revealed that their performances are different and depends on the Ni/Cu ratio. The catalysts were tested using various reaction conditions, such as time and temperature, and their performances analysed based on t...

EFFECT OF SYNTHESIS PARAMETERS ON SORPTIVE PROPERTIES OF GLYCEROL-DERIVED MESOPOROUS CARBON
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 1
The effect of synthesis conditions on sorptive properties of glycerol-derived mesoporous carbon materials were studied. Sorption properties of the synthesized carbon-based materials regarding to different adsorbate molecules, as well as water vapors, phenol and methylene blue molecules were analyzed. The sorption capacity of the synthesized mesoporous carbons depends upon synthesis conditions, namely upon pyrolyzing temperature and carbon precursor to silica weight ratio, being determined by ...

BIODEGRADATION BEHAVIOR OF POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) – WOOD COMPOSITES
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 1
A study on the biodegradability of several formulations based on poly[vinyl alcohol] (PVA) and wood flour has been carried out. Basically, all formulations are based on PVA and wood flour, and the influence of starch, glycerol and/or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) incorporated in some of them was investigated. Biodegradation was performed by incubation of the composites with a selected Aspergillus niger strain able to act as an polymer biodegrading agent. The composites biodegradation was evaluated...

NEW CATALYSTS USED IN THE HYDROGENOLYSIS REACTION OF GLYCEROL
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 1
The catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol, a by-product of the biodiesel manufacturing process was studied on copper chromite catalysts with different chemical composition. The obtaining of propylene glycol was studied under mild reaction conditions (180- 240oC temperature range, 8 hours reaction time and moderate pressures). These important parameters have significant effects on the glycerol conversion and that is way the actual study was concerned to the obtaining of a superior selectivity t...

EVALUATION OF BIOMETHANE YIELDS FROM HIGH-ENERGY ORGANIC WASTE AND SEWAGE SLUDGE: A PILOT STUDY FOR A WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 9
The article describes a pilot study on a wastewater treatment plant operating a biogas plant (2.793 MW). The authors of the experiment used organic waste material, including: chicken fat with feathers (FF), molasses (M), glycerol (GL), raw sewage sludge (SS) and digested sewage sludge as an inoculum. The parameters of raw and digested sludge were compared, e.g. changes in the concentrations of ammonium nitrogen (N-NH4+), alkalinities, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and light metal ions. Potenti...

DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF BIOPLASTICS FROM Hermetia illucens prepupae PROTEINS
Environmental Engineering and Management Journal › Vol. 18 › Nr. 10
Proteins from Hermetia illucens (or Black Soldier Fly, BSF) have been employed in this study as possible source for bioplastic formulation. This type of bioplastic can replace the actual materials employed in agriculture, avoiding the critical issues concerning the soil pollution due to conventional plastic end-life. Different plasticizing agents (glycerol and polyethylene glycol) have been tested and the ability to generate a homogenous film, through wet casting, has been evaluated. Characteriz...
