Assessing the potential of wind power in Romania within Kyoto targets
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 6Nr. 3
The Kyoto target for Romania was to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 8 % from the 1989 levels. The 1989 emissions were around 260 million tones. In 2000 the net CO2 emission - some 125 million tones - were 54% of the net CO2 emission in the reference year -1989, leaving some 115 million tones as a reserve or as a tradable resource to other countries that can not met their Kyoto targets. Assuming that Romania will sell 100 millions tones of its extra quota in accordance to Article 17 under ...

Environmental problems of copper complex in Bor area
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 6Nr. 4
AbstractThe paper discusses some environmental problems caused by the presence of the copper mining and processing complex in the Bor area (Eastern Serbia). The Bor area is a serious hot spot in Serbia. Unsupervised operation of the mining company RTB Bor, without any protective measures, has led to extreme pollution of the Bor River, the Danube and underground waters, soil pollution with heavy metals, air-pollution with sulfur-dioxide etc. Recommendations are suggested as follows: a sustainable...

Kinetics of carbon dioxide absorption into aqueous solutions of 1, 5, 8, 12- tetraazadodecane (APEDA)
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 6Nr. 6
AbstractThe absorption of CO2 into an aqueous solution with 1.45 mol/L 1,5,8,12-tetraazadodecane (APEDA) polyamine has been studied at three temperature (298, 313, 333 K) in a Lewis type absorber with a constant gas-liquid interface area of (15.34 ± 0.05) x 10-4 m2. The experimental results have been interpreted using the equations derived from the two film model with the assumption that the absorption occurred in the fast pseudo- first- order kinetic regime. The results confirmed the validity ...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 7Nr. 3
AbstractMesoporous Ti-SBA-15 materials have been synthesized up to a Si/Ti ratio of 20 using a two-step pH adjusting method. Low angle X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed that the optimal pH value to synthesize highly ordered mesoporous solids having Ti atoms primarily in tetrahedral coordination environments is around 7.5. The nitrogen physisorption and TEM indicated also ordered mesostructures having relatively large surface areas and uniform mesopore size di...

Carbon dioxide emission associated with the production of plastics - A comparison of production from crude oil and recycling for the dutch case
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 8Nr. 4
Abstract Literature data show that in general, plastics produced through the mechanical recycling route involve less carbon dioxide emission than when produced from crude oil. A review of readily available data shows that road transport of untreated waste plastics account for a significant portion of the carbon dioxide emission generated during recycling. Therefore, much carbon dioxide emission can be saved by optimizing the logistics in the recycling of plastics. On the example of polyolefi...

The variation of acidity and the wet deposition fluxes of rainwater in Nanning City were analyzed based on the local acid rain monitoring data provided by environmental protection authorities from 1991 to 2004. The result shows that the annual value of pH is less than 5.6 in the past 14 years and the wet deposition has been getting more and more severe in Nanning. The ratio of SO42-/NO3 - has decreased. NO3 - has played an increasingly large role in acidity, though SO4 2- remains a key player. T...

INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN ESTONIA
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 11Nr. 1
The indoor climate of educational institutions (kindergartens, secondary schools and universities) in Estonia is investigated. The main hazards for students’ health are: the high concentration (over 800 ppm) of carbon dioxide in the classrooms that refers to the inappropriate ventilation; the non-ergonomic computer workplaces where the direction of the natural light (without blinds for the windows) is causing glare on the monitors; the low humidity of the air in winter; the low air temperature...

THERMAL STABILITY AND SURFACE STRUCTURE OF SnO2-CeO2 IMPREGNATED CATALYSTS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 11Nr. 1
Newly prepared SnO2-CeO2 catalyst samples used as depollution catalysts were characterized applying low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-gravimetry (TG-dTG) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) methods. Pure SnO2 has higher surface area (17 m2/g) than the pure CeO2 (8 m2/g). Addition of organic tin oxide precursor to ceria in amount of 5 wt% slightly decreases the surface area of CeO2 (SSn5-Ce= 7 m2/g). The increase of tin oxide content to 10 and 20 wt...

STUDY ON GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 12Nr. 1
Abstract One of the causes of climate change is the accumulation of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Methane (CH4) is one of the greenhouse gases, with an ability to trap heat in Earth's atmosphere 21 times greater than carbon dioxide (CO2) per unit mass and in the same period of time. Because the lifetime of methane in the atmosphere is relatively short, it could be kept under control. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are anthropogenic sources of CH4 emissions. CHARACTERISTICS OF WASTE BARK COMBUSTION
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 3
The paper presents some aspects regarding the use of certain bark biomass as sustainable and renewable fuel. The main bark uses are listed exhaustively, emphasizing the fact that they are parts of the forestry biomass. The main problems arising from the ecological burning of bark are highlighted, namely the amount of ash and the resulting gases, especially carbon dioxide, but the emphasis is placed on the amount of heat and ash that bark produces during combustion. Accordingly, the high and low ...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 4
The remarkable photocatalytic properties of titanium dioxide and the high adsorption capacity of the mesoporous materials were combined to obtain active photocatalysts for the decomposition of Rhodamine 6G dye. The mesoporous TiO2 was obtained by the controlled hydrolysis-condensation of titanium isopropoxide, using hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide as template, followed by calcination to remove the organic matter. Subsequently, this sample was doped with sodium wolframate and platinum. T...

LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ALTERNATIVELY SUPPLIED CARS. RESULTS OF AN INVESTIGATION CARRIED OUT IN THE NORTH-EAST OF ITALY
Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 8
The transport of both goods and passengers notably influences air quality. If strong decisions by the governments will not be taken, oil consumption for transport will be nearly doubled in 2030 if compared with 2000, thus considerably increasing the atmospheric presence of greenhouse gases. To boost the purchase of alternatively supplied cars would avoid serious, if not catastrophic, climatic changes. Our investigation shows what the situation is concerning new cars sold by SINA, an official ...

Environmental Engineering and Management JournalVol. 16Nr. 8
Biofuels and biochemicals are currently centre stage in the on-going scientific and political debate. The prevalent opinion is that their use can significantly reduce the greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and primary energy demand along their whole value chain. This study aims at evaluating the environmental impact in terms of GHGs related to carbon dioxide (CO2) of secondgeneration sugars (2GSs) production from cardoon residual biomass.
